Gower representatives dismay at job losses at Coated Metals, Pontarddulais

Martin Caton MP and Edwina Hart AM, today expressed their sadness and disappointment at the loss of the jobs at Coated Metals, Pontarddulais as part of the Corus restructuring plans announced this week.

Mr. Caton said, “Coated Metals has been an important and valued employer in Pontarddulais and this is terrible news. The fact that steel producers across the world have all seen their order books cutback dramatically is no comfort to the workers and their families who now face an uncertain future, as a result of the recession.

“Now, we need governments in Whitehall and Cardiff Bay to do everything they can to support these people and their communities in the difficult days ahead, especially in finding alternative employment or training opportunities.”

Edwina Hart said, “This decision has nothing to do with the quality of work carried out at the plant in Pontarddulais or the commitment of the excellent workforce.

“The Assembly is putting innovative training programmes into place. The ReAct scheme will be available to any Corus worker in Pontarddulais who is made redundant.

“We need policies to bring the recession to an end at the earliest possible time and we need to invest in our most important asset, our people. The employees of Coated Metals have demonstrated, over the years, what they can achieve, we need to invest in those individuals now.”
