Gower politicians express “deep concern” at 3M review of operations at its Gorseinon plant

Martin Caton MP and Edwina Hart AM have both expressed their grave concern that 3M management has begun a collective consultation with the Trade Union side at Gorseinon following a decline in demand for some of the products manufactured in the local plant.

Mr. Caton said, “I was at a meeting with senior UK management just before Christmas and I did get the impression that there were worries about the sustainability of some lines at Gorseinon but hoped that these would be overcome without a threat to jobs.

“That review of operations means that the company is looking to cutback in an area or areas where energy and raw material costs have threatened profitability. We have no idea of the scale of the reduction that they might be looking for or exactly which area of production is under consideration. It is a very worrying time for the workforce and their families.

3M has a reputation as a good, responsible employer, here in the Gower constituency with a partnership approach to working with the Unions that has been exemplary. We urge them to continue that good practice at this difficult time.”

Edwina Hart AM said, “We want to see 3M continue as one of the most important manufacturing bases in our constituency. We appeal to the UK and local management to pull out all the stops to protect jobs here. If any production is to be discontinued we urge 3M, one of the most innovative companies in the world to look to base new production lines in Gorseinon, where they know the track record of the workforce to be first class.”

Both politicians are seeking an early meeting with the management and Trade Unions at 3M Gorseinon.
