School & College Building Boost Welcomed

Gower Labour AM Edwina Hart today welcomed a Welsh Assembly Government funding boost to improve school / college buildings in City and County of Swansea.

The funding forms £9 million of the total £23 million announced at the third economic summit of capital expenditure that is to brought forward into this financial year 2008-09.

It will allow Local Authorities to address any backlog maintenance works planned for 2009-10 to be completed earlier.

A further £4.26 million will also to be made available to Further Education Institutions to support small capital works that help address the long standing problem of condition and suitability of their educational accommodation.

Edwina Hart AM said:

“This funding will be welcome news for both students and teaching staff and will also help to support the Welsh construction industry and small businesses as we navigate our way through the current economic downturn.

Having the best possible learning environment for all our students is a key priority for the Welsh Assembly Government and this £13 million Wales-wide funding boost is part of its on-going commitment to transform educational facilities in Wales.”
