AM Welcomes Funding Boost for Disabled Young People

Gower Labour AM Edwina Hart has welcomed a new £2.75m funding boost to improve services and provision for disabled young people across Wales.

The £2.75m of investment from the Welsh Assembly Government includes money to raise awareness of benefit entitlement, provide more play opportunities for disabled children and offer short break services for children with complex disabilities.

Details of the funding package include:

  • An extra £500,000 over two years to raise awareness of benefits to which parents and carers of children with disabilities are entitled.
  • £250,000 available for each of the next three years to help local councils provide play opportunities for disabled children. Local authorities are being asked to set aside at least £250,000 from already allocated resources for this, to create a fund of £500,000.
  • Additional funding of £1.5m to pay for more short breaks services for children with complex disabilities.

Edwina Hart AM said:

“I welcome this boost to services for disabled children, young people and their families. The importance of play in a child’s life, the opportunity to mix with others is essential for the wellbeing of all young people. This funding will help to make that goal a reality for more disabled children and young people across Wales.”
