Gower AM Welcomes Latest Transport Grant Boost
Gower Labour AM Edwina Hart has welcomed today’s (12 March) by Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones of an £117.6 million funding package for 2008-09, a rise of 16.2 per cent, to improve Wales’ transport infrastructure and promote more sustainable modes of transport
The City and County of Swansea is set to receive some £8.3 million of the grant for a variety of transport programmes. The programmes include Safe Routes in Communities, a Park and Ride package, Swansea Transport Package and Bus Priority Demonstration Corridors.
Edwina Hart AM said:
“I am delighted that Welsh Assembly Government funding will enable the City and County of Swansea to carry forward work on integrated transport projects as well as providing support for their commitment to the healthy and environmentally friendly alternatives of walking and cycling in safety.”
She added:
“I know that local children in my constituency have been very involved with Safe Routes in their communities and I am particularly pleased to note that Crwys Primary, Knelston Primary, Bishopston Primary and Penyrheol Primary Schools are set to benefit from the grant by £105,000, £31,000, £40,000 and £106,000 respectively.”
The Welsh Assembly Government’s Transport Grant is paid to local authorities to support the cost of local transport schemes, including infrastructure and rail projects, integrated transport packages, walking and cycling schemes and Safe Routes in Communities projects
Local authorities bid annually for Transport Grant support in a competitive bidding round.
