Visit by Mrs.Hart to site of new Primary Care Centre in Clydach

Mrs Edwina Hart, Assembly Member for Gower, today paid a visit to see how building work on the new health centre in Clydach was progressing. The new Centre, being built on the former Fairfield site, has been developed in conjunction with the GPs, Local Health Board, the local Trust and the sector specialist developer Apollo Capital Projects. The project was highlighted as a priority by the LHB when it developed its estate strategy in 2005.

Dr Amos and Dr Tristhram from the practice, Mrs Dorothy Edwards, Deputy Chief Executive of Swansea LHB, and Mr Rob James of Apollo Capital Projects, were among those who welcomed Mrs Hart to the development which is due for completion in February 2009.

The new centre will provide state of the art accommodation for the practice housing consulting rooms, a dedicated suite for the management of patients with chronic conditions, minor surgery and community health services, such as district nursing, health visiting and podiatry services. A pharmacy will also be attached to the new building.

This will be the first project in Wales for Apollo Capital Projects, who in designing and developing the project are using local materials and labour.

Dr Tristhram said that “this fantastic facility will allow us to improve our existing service and extend the service offered to patients locally.” He added, “As doctors, we felt strongly that we wanted to stay in the village, this site was ideal as it's still in the heart of the community and easily accessible for patients travelling by bus, and with car parking”.

Clydach will be the second new primary care centre to open in Swansea. In April the GPs at Strawberry Place Surgery in Morriston moved into their new building, and together with Clydach Primary Care Centre is part of the continuing strategy by the LHB to provide modern primary care premises for Swansea.
