Salute to the First Minister

Gower AM Edwina Hart said today (Thursday 1 October): ‘Rhodri Morgan has been a great leader of Welsh Labour this past decade.’

She added:

‘Rhodri’s contribution to Welsh life over this period - and indeed for many years before that - is impossible to sum up in a few words. I can’t think of any other politician who symbolises all that’s best in our country in the way that he does. His ability to talk to individuals and to the whole nation simultaneously about issues which are deeply important to them has been helped by his huge knowledge of the country itself.’

‘His grasp of complex subjects such as economics and Welsh culture has always gone hand in hand with his genuine enthusiasm for more popular interests such as sport and leisure.’

‘As a minister who worked under him in several different roles I can honestly say that he created a new, more self-confident Wales, and he never abandoned the idea that Wales is a caring country with its own set of social values. He laid the foundations for a great future and I think we should all, politicians and non-politicians alike, work tirelessly to complete his vision now that he’s decided to opt for a well-earned retirement.’
