International Credit Union Day

Gower AM Edwina Hart has joined Local Government and Communities Minister Carl Sargeant today in highlighting the benefits of joining a credit union on International Credit Union Day (Thursday 20 October 2011). This year’s International Credit Union Day theme, Credit Unions Build a Better World, emphasises the important economic and social contributions credit unions worldwide make to their communities.

Edwina Hart said:

Given the current financial climate it is more important than ever to have a safe place for your savings and Credit Unions are backed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. For those struggling for financial help then credit unions offer a safe place to turn particularly for those financially excluded from mainstream providers.’

There are 22 credit unions covering the whole of Wales providing services to more than 50,000 members. The Welsh Government is committed to supporting credit unions so that more people are given the chance to save and access affordable credit and budgeting advice.
