Bullying Not Acceptable Says AM

Edwina Hart AM has backed a campaign to stamp out bullying in schools across Gower.

Labour AM Edwina Hart today ( Tuesday 15 November 2011) showed her support for Anti-Bullying Week, which was set up to encourage pupils, staff and parents to work together to stop bullying in our schools.

Mrs Hart said:

“One case of bullying is a case too many. I know that pupils, staff and parents are working hard to eradicate it but unfortunately it still goes on.”

“Obviously, the huge popularity of social media with young people means cyber-bullying has become a growing problem. Parents, staff and governors need to be aware of new technologies and try and promote safe usage both at home and school.”

“Anti-bullying week is an opportunity for students, professionals and parents to get together and share experiences that will help them deal with and understand bullying. We must all spread the message that it has no place in our schools.”

Throughout this week, pupils and parents will be involved in a host of activities to raise awareness about bullying and discuss the best ways to tackle it.

The Welsh Government’s Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, said:

“Anti-Bullying Week is an ideal opportunity for professionals, parents and students to share best practice and learn from each others’ experiences.”

“It is important that everyone involved in a pupil’s education understands bullying in all its forms. Our comprehensive new guidance, Respecting Others, identifies five different forms of bullying and offers advice on how to prevent situations from escalating and taking action when incidents occur.”
